My Skin Care Routine for Acne-Prone Skin

Acne, the uncurable ghost that has been haunting most people since the day Mother Nature graced us with puberty. No one likes waking up in the morning to a pimple on their chin or forehead (those are the worst). I spent my fairshares of time and money on acne products that promised results when I was in high school. It took me years to realize that having a consistent skin care routine with the right products will do more wonders than the expensive line that we see on IG or YouTube. Here is my skin care routine that I’ve been following for the past four years that helped to treat and prevent acne.

Morning

Cleanse and Prep for Products

Washing our face in the morning can often be dismissed since we’ve only been sleeping, how can our face be dirty? Well cleansing our skin in the morning will helps to remove products from the night before to prevent them from clogging your pores. It also helps to stimulate blood flow and opening up our pores for other skin care products.

I recommend using a gentle cleanser, such as the Dove Baby Body Wash, it cleanses so well without stripping the skin of its moisture. I like to pat the skin dry and follow up with a hot damp towel to depuff my face and help to open up my pores.

Day Time Products

Most of my day time products can be used for day and night time, with the exception of sunscreen. I would start with rehydating my skin with a witch hazel toner, I opt for the alcohol free to prevent my skin from drying. I recently added the Clarin Hydra Essentiel Bi Phase serumto my routine. Since the weather has been quite hot, I needed a product that will keeps my skin hydrated all day without the feeling of greasiness. Using the right products to properly moisturize the skin will prevent our skin from producing excess oil that could clog our pores, leading to acne.

Sunscreen is the number one product that I must have before leaving the house. I can skip everything else, but sunscreen is the one thing that I cannot skip.

Using a quality sunscreen will keep our skin cool since it act as a protective barrier, protecting our skin from the hot temperature. A sunscreen with atleast SPF 25-30 will help prevent sun damage, one of the leading causes for dark spots and acne scars.

If you happen to have a pimple on your forehead or chin, I recommend using a pimple patch to protect your pimple from dirt. Avoid popping it to prevent your skin from scarring. Check out my review of the Cosrx pimple patches, it is literally my holy grail for spot treatments.

Night

Cleanse and Detox

After a long day of work, I always enjoy pampering myself with my skincare routine. I like to start of with a cleansing balm that helps to remove makeup and dirt buildup on my skin. I prefer using a cleansing balm since it doesn’t require the use of a cotton pad, and I can massage it into the skin.

I like to wash my face in the shower so the steam can open my pores, as I follow up with my favorite gel cleanser from Cosrx. This gel cleanser is gentle on the skin and cleanses well, much stronger than my morning cleanser to wash away all of the impurities collected on my face during the day.

Cleansing our skin well is an important step of preventing our acne. We want to avoid build-up and impurities that could infect our skin, causing whiteheads and blackheads. This step is often overlooked especially after a long day, but I promise it will make a big difference. I like to wash my face with warm water to help open up the pores.

Night Time Treatment

Similar to my day time routine, I like to spray my face with witch hazel toner and follow up with a hydrating serum. I follow up with a hydrating moisturizer and treat myself to a massage, and finish with an eye cream. If there are pimples, I would apply the patches to my skin to prevent myself from scratching it while sleep.

Skin Care Treat

Every three to four days, I like to exfoliate my skin with to remove the dead skin from the surface layer. To prevent from over exfoliation, I recommend using a gel cleanser that will gently peel away the dead skin.

I used to use an apricot exfoliation that contained little beads but I realized it was doing more damaged than good. The gritty texture can scar the skin, and the harsh cleanser can strip away the skin’s natural oil.

On days where I’m up early, wearing makeup for a long time or just need a little TLC, I enjoys treating my skin to a hydrating face mask. Lately, I’ve been in love with the Dr. Jart Hydrating masks, they are thick and full of hydrating contents that makes me feel like skin has been pampered for hours. It also leaves my skin feeling soft for the next few days.

Conclusion

Clearing skin of acne takes time and can be a painful process. My journey to clear skin took several years, and I still suffer from occasional breakouts due to stress and physical changes. There are many different factors that could influence the health of our skin such as weather, stress, diet, and physical exercise. Having a consistent routine with suitable products are great to treat and prevent future breakouts.
